FEDERAL BUILDING
HONOLULU
DECEMBER 9, 1941
Douglas Wada stands next to Gero Iwai and stares down at the collection of consulate documents, spread out on the table in front of them. There are several garbage bags with more in the interrogation room.
âYou called me over here for this?â Wada asks his friend.
Iwai shrugs. âWhat else you have going on?â
Wada canât help but laugh. In truth, he is a huge help because Iwai has never lived in Japan and there are words and phrases that the Army intelligence officer may not be familiar with.25
One bag of the documents has been emptied on the table, forming a birdâs nest of shredded paper. âI guess the consulate people had a chance to rip up everything.â
âAnd burn it too,â Iwai says. âThe police didnât mention this to us when they said they were coming.â
âThis must have come from the unopened safe,â says Iwai, seeing a stack of cables from Kita to Tokyo. The lines are broken into ten five-letter segments. In any language, it makes no sense. âItâll have to be sent off to be decoded.â
âNow we both have to piece the rest of this stuff together,â Wada says, looking forlornly at the pile of torn paperwork. They form two mounds of paper shreds, one for larger pieces that they have some hope of identifying. But these documents have been shredded expertly and mixed in a bag, leaving the remains indecipherable.
After spending time arranging sections from several bags, no part of any of the jigsaw puzzles come together. âI donât think weâll be able to do this,â Iwai concedes.
âWell, Iâm taking some larger pieces back with me,â Wada says, plucking a few off the table. âItâll show Captain Mayfield what you got me into.â 26
